Title: West of Shetlands oil a fraction of Gulf of Mexico depths (2 of 3) |
Of interest to: 12 |
Script details: |
Oil drilling in the West of Shetlands would only be at a fraction of the depths of extraction in the Gulf of Mexico – that’s according to George Lyon, the Scottish Lib Dem MEP. Environmentalists have raised concerns about the risks of drilling deeper in the wake of the disaster in America. And the European Energy Commissioner says he is considering a moratorium on new exploration. George Lyon says safety levels in the North Sea are high and there is still plenty of oil and gas to extract. NOTE TO EDITORS: For interviews with two environmentalists see reports 6840 to 6845. |
