Of interest to:South West |
Script details: |
Support South West farmers - that's the message from Julie Girling. The Conservative MEP for our region is outraged that whilst our egg producers have spent millions improving the welfare conditions for chicken, elsewhere in Europe battery farms are still in operation. Under EU law they have been illegal since the beginning of this year. Julie Girling wants consumers to ask questions where eggs - or egg based products like cakes - have come from to make sure we're not buying from battery farm countries. NOTE TO EDITORS: The NFU may well have local case studies of local egg farmers who have invested and now fear being undercut |

A South West MEP wants consumer pressure to get battery eggs totally off the shelves. Since the beginning of this year battery farming is illegal. Under European law the animals must now be in so-called enriched cages at the very least. South West farmers have spent millions upgrading their facilities. But EU inspectors found battery farms in thirteen countries – including France, Hungary and Romania. The EU’s health chief is threatening court action against them unless they get their farmers into line. The government has got major retailers hereto promise not to stock eggs from those countries, but South West Euro MP, Julie Girling, thinks some might still be getting on to the market. So she's launched her 'Good Egg Bad Egg' campaign and wants your help.

An independent Scotland joining the EU would have to join the Euro, says Struan Stevenson. The Finance Secretary, John Swinney, has made it clear this week that he would like an independent Scotland to keep the Pound. But critics have questioned whether that would be possible. Under the so-called Lisbon Treaty all new members of the European Union must join the Euro once they meet the economic requirements. According to Euro MP Struan Stevenson that would likely see Scotland in the single currency from day one. He says he was stunned to discover that the SNP government have apparently not sought clarification on the issue from the EU’s chief for new members. |

The Scottish government have made “no contact” with the EU over the Euro question, according to a Scottish MEP. Conservative Euro MP, Struan Stevenson, asked the European Enlargement Commissioner (the man responsible for new members of the EU) what correspondence he has had with Holyrood, particularly over the question of the single currency if Scotland became independent. The answer, according to Mr Stevenson, is none whatsoever. Meanwhile Finance Secretary, John Swinney, has announced that the SNP would like an independent Scotland to keep the pound for the foreseeable future. But Struan Stevenson says the rules are clear that any new member of the European Union must join the Euro. |

Manufacturers should put health ahead of marketing ploys says Glenis Willmott. The East Midlands Euro MP managed to win round the backing of the European Parliament and defeat new claims manufacturers had wanted to put on their packaging. Going round the supermarket plenty of products say “reduced fat” or “low salt”. In fact under EU rules they can only put that if it contains 30 per cent less than their rivals on a like for like basis. This lunchtime MEPs said no to manufacturers who wanted to go further and be allowed to put claims like “15 per cent less fat”. Glenis Willmott says that would have given the false impression it was healthier than something labelled “reduced fat”. |

“Now with 15 per cent less fat” – those are the kinds of percentage health claims which have been blocked this lunchtime by the European Parliament after a campaign by an East Midlands MEPs. Manufacturers are allowed to put words like ‘reduced fat’ or ‘low salt’ on packaging but only if those ingredients are at least a third less than major rivals. The big brands wanted permission to put percentage claims based purely on the record of their products alone. East Midlands Labour MEP, Glenis Willmott, is delighted the European Parliament agreed with her. She says the claims that would have given the false impression that something was healthier. NOTE TO EDITORS: Under EU rules, manufacturers can put the word ‘reduced’ if they have lower fat or sugar or salt compared to other similar products on the market by at least 30 per cent. If they had been allowed to say '15 per cent less' (defeated by MEPs today), Glenis Willmott argued it would sound better but in fact been less healthy than items labelled 'reduced'. Bite the Ballot started just a couple of years ago with the idea of switching young people on to politics. It is run by the young people themselves and aims to show why politics matters. In the last general election just 39 per cent of 18 to 24 year olds voted. If the team meet them ambition that could be up to 80 per cent by 2015. The EU's energy chief needs to come to Scotland to see our oil first hand, says Alyn Smith. He is worried about EU plans for new Europe-wide rules on the industry and has written to the Energy Commissioner, Günther Oettinger, to invite him here. According to the SNP Euro MP, the European Commission’s proposals would see safety regulated in a blanket way, rather than by looking at the individual issues for each rig and installation. The industry body, Oil and Gas UK is also concerned. But the plans are still at an early stage. Alyn Smith says there’s still time to get them right. The EU must get tough on battery egg farms or fail on animal welfare – that’s the warning from George Lyon. Egg farmers have had more than a decade to get rid of old battery cages, which were outlawed from the beginning of this year. But MEPs from across the political divide have been warning for months that farmers in many EU countries would fail to meet the deadline. All of Scotland's farms are up to standard, but EU inspectors found battery farming is still going on in thirteen other countries in Europe. So it’s threatening court action if they don’t sort it. Meanwhile in pig farming a Europe-wide ban on sow stalls is supposed to come into force next January (2014). The stalls are often too small for the pregnant sows to be able to more around properly. They have been illegal in the UK for some thirteen years. But the former farmer, turned Lib Dem MEP, George Lyon, says elsewhere in Europe farmers are watching to see whether the EU really follows through on battery hens, before deciding to improve standards for their pigs. |

New statistics showing more EU students wanting to come to Scotland, prove that free university education is unsustainable, according to one of our MEPs. The latest figures from UCAS show that in England the number of applicants from elsewhere in the EU has fallen by 16 per cent. But here in Scotland the numbers are up by six per cent. European Union students from outside the UK must be treated the same as Scottish students under EU rules, so they don’t pay tuition fees. The Scottish Government says that costs Scottish taxpayers around £75 million a year. Conservative Euro MP, Struan Stevenson, says the government will not be able to change those rules. He believes the only solution is to introduce fees like England. |

More European students in Scotland are an “unsustainable” drain, according to the MEP, Struan Stevenson. The latest figures from UCAS – the university admissions service – show an increase of six per cent in applicants from elsewhere in the EU wanting to study in Scotland compared to last year. Like Scottish students, people coming from elsewhere in Europe, outside the UK, don’t have to pay fees. Meanwhile the number of EU students applying to English universities – with fees of up to £9,000 a year – has fallen by 16 per cent. The Scottish government has estimated that foreign EU students are costing the taxpayer £75 million a year. Conservative Euro MP, Struan Stevenson, says the growing numbers are an unsustainable burden on the economy. He says tuition fees like in England now need to be introduced in Scotland. A public health researcher has become the Yorkshire and Humber’s newest MEP. Rebecca Taylor today accepted the post which became free following the resignation of Diana Wallis. Mrs Wallis’ surprise resignation two weeks ago led to friction within the Liberal Democrat party because her husband, Stewart Arnold, was offered the job as the next person on the Lib Dem list from the last election. He eventually declined the seat which meant that it was open to thirty-six year old Rebecca Taylor. Senior Euro MP, Andrew Duff, knows her and says she will be excellent for the region. |

Rebecca Taylor will be the Yorkshire and Humber’s newest MEP. The vacancy was a result of the resignation earlier this month of Lib Dem, Diana Wallis. Under UK European election rules it is usual for the next person on the party list to be offered the seat – that was Diana Wallis’ husband, Stewart Arnold. After criticism – including from within the party – of nepotism, he declined the seat. That left the way clear for third of the list – Rebecca Taylor to be offered the post. She accepted it today. And according to Lib Dem colleague, Andrew Duff MEP, she will make a “formidable parliamentarian” for Yorkshire and the Humber. |

Could gas bills in Northern Ireland be about to take a tumble? That’s the hope of MEP, Jim Nicholson. The European Commission has announced that it is taking the UK and Irish governments to the European Court of Justice for not fully connecting Northern Ireland to the energy grid. The EU says if Northern Ireland had more pipelines there would be more room for competition and consumers would have more choice. Jim Nicholson belives it would also lead to lower prices. He says he hopes the court action will now spur both governments into action. |

The EU is taking the government to court to give gas consumers in Northern Ireland better competition. 44 per cent of people in Northern Ireland live in fuel poverty. The European Commission announced today that it has started so called “infringement proceedings” against the UK and Irish government because both have failed to connect Northern Ireland up to the full European grid. The EU believes that with more pipelines other companies would be able to enter the market leading to more competition, and hopefully lower prices for consumers. Ulster Unionist MEP, Jim Nicholson says at the moment consumers in Northern Ireland get a raw deal on their energy bills. EU sanctions will be worthless if they only target mackerel sales from Iceland and the Faroes into the EU, the Scottish Fishermen’s Organisation has warned. A final round of talks are under way in Bergen in Norway to try and resolve the dispute which has now into its third year. Iceland and the Faroe Islands maintain that they are entitled to a much bigger share of the stock than they got in the last international agreement. Meanwhile Scottish fishermen say they are feeling the pinch as prices fall and Scotland’s market share is eaten away. Scottish Fishermen's Organisation Chief Exec, Iain MacSween, says unless the EU broaden their threat of sanctions, Iceland and the Faroes are very unlikely to back down. |

A Yorkshire and Humber MEP has raised the breast implant scandal in the European Parliament. Linda McAvan got the issue put on the agenda of the Health Committee this week. It is estimated that 500,000 women across Europe – 40,000 in the UK – have been affected by the scandal. Some have found it difficult to find out what kind of implant they have been given. Linda McAvan believes that is unacceptable. She wants all implants to be barcoded, the information put on a Europe-wide register, and an industry insurance scheme to pay for removal or replacement of implants if they become dangerous. Linda McAvan says a register is already in use when it comes to prescription medicines, and that could be expanded to include up to date information on implants. |

A Europe-wide register for patients must be set up in the wake of the PIP scandal, a Yorkshire and Humber MEP says. The PIP breast implants made by a French company were used for years before their safety was called into question. It is estimated that in the UK some 40,000 PIP implants were used. But some women have found it hard to find out what kind of implant had been used in their operation. The EU is currently reviewing European law on so-called “medical devices” and Yorkshire and Humber MEP, Linda McAvan wants to make sure in future women can easily access the information they need. It was nearly ten years ago that MEPs recommended a Europe-wide database for all implants. Linda McAvan says it is now clearly urgent to get the register up and running. |

Of interest to:Yorkshire and the Humber |
Script details: |
Diana Wallis has resigned as an MEP. The Liberal Democrat has represented the region since 1999 in the European Parliament. In 2007 she became a Vice President with special responsibility for transparency and citizens’ rights – issues she told us which are “close to her heart”. Earlier this week she failed to win the backing of enough MEPs to become president. A behind the scenes deal between the largest political groups to select German Socialist, Martin Schultz, always made her campaign a huge uphill struggle. Speaking after the presidency vote, but before her resignation became public, Diana Wallis said she hoped her legacy would be for better connections between the parliament and people it represents. |

Electrical waste from the UK is still being dumped on developing countries – that’s according to a South East politician. MEPs in the European Parliament this lunchtime backed new rules on the recycling of electrical and electronic waste. The law, which needs to be rubber stamped by ministers, will eventually see higher recycling targets. And the European Commission has promised tougher inspections to try and clamp down on waste being illegally shipped out of Europe. South East Lib Dem, Catherine Bearder, has been calling for action. She says it’s vital to stop the environmental and human health damage electrical waste is causing. NOTE TO EDITORS: For background see http://bit.ly/yfvBIH |

Of interest to:South West |
Script details: |
Shops in the South West should benefit from extra trade if we start taking our old electricals back to be recycled, according to one of our MEPs. The idea, which is part of new electricals waste rules passed this lunchtime in the European Parliament, are designed to improve our recycling rates here and across Europe. South West MEP, Julie Girling, is welcoming the changes. She says at the moment it is all too easy to hoard away old toasters and mobile phones, or to just drop them into the general bin. This is her advice on how to do it greener. |

In future you’ll be able to take small electricals back to shops to be recycled when a new law comes into force. Euro MPs meeting in Strasbourg passed the law this lunchtime which will come into force once its been rubber stamped by ministers. Many of us have mobile phones, old cameras and even toasters stored away because we’re not too sure what to do with them. It’s hoped recycling rates for electrical and electronics will go up if we can simply drop them off at larger stores. The politicians believe that at the moment too many gadgets still end up in landfill, wasting precious metals and causing environmental damage. The South West MEP, Julie Girling, is welcoming the new rules. She says consumers now need better, clearer, information on what to do with waste. Of interest to:Scotland |
Script details: |
Illegal pesticides could be damaging people’s health and the environment – that’s the warning by Europol and something of concern to one of our Scottish MEPs. The European law enforcement agency has been monitoring fake pesticides. Europol believes in some countries up to a quarter of pesticides bought for use on crops could be fake. It’s thought that counterfeit products may be using chemicals not allowed under European law because of their risks to health and the environment. SNP MEP, Alyn Smith, is calling for more work to be done into the scale of the problem. Meanwhile he is advising farmers to only buy from reputable wholesalers. |

The European law enforcement agency, Europol, has identified a growing problem of counterfeit sprays getting onto the market. Title:Shale gas exploration in South East - MEP demands moratorium (2 of 3) |
Of interest to:South East |
Script details: |
Right around the region – from Oxfordshire to Kent – there are plans developing for shale gas, says Keith Taylor. The process, also known as fracking, involves drilling deep down to a gravel-like layer beneath the earth’s surface. Chemicals are then pumped in to cause small explosion which release stores of natural gas. In the USA it has become a major source of energy, but critics have questioned whether there are environmental impacts particularly for land and on water supplies. South East Green MEP shares the scepticism. He says until more is known about it, there should be a shale gas moratorium right across Europe. |

Title:Shale gas exploration in South East - MEP demands moratorium (1 of 3) |

Script details: |
A Europe-wide moratorium on shale gas drilling – that’s the demand from South East MEP, Keith Taylor. It is understood that licences have been granted – or are in the process of being granted – right around the South East of England. Shale gas, or fracking is a process, already common in the USA, which uses chemicals pumped deep down shafts to cause small explosion and release natural gas. Tests in Lancashire were brought to a halt after drill there caused minor earthquakes. Keith Taylor is meeting with concerned residents on Friday at Balcombe near Crawley in West Sussex where fracking company Cuadrilla has been granted an exploration licence. He is also following environmental questions which have been raised with the European Commission. The South East’s Green MEP says he feels, along with local campaigners in Sussex, at the moment there are just too many questions for shale gas to be given the go ahead.
