The meat isn’t known to be dangerous to eat, but MEPs say the animals are too often born with fatal illnesses and malformations. South West fishermen could help make fishing stock stats more accurate – that’s the suggestion one of our MEPs has been putting to EU officials. The data is important because it is used to decide whether to make more cuts on the number of days fishermen can go out to sea, and how much they can catch in future. Julie Girling, the South West’s Conservative MEP has been meeting with industry experts and the European Fisheries Commissioner, Maria Damanaki in Strasbourg to raise the concerns of fishermen from our region. The sentencing of a County Durham man for bidding for his own sales on eBay is a warning to others – says Lib Dem, Diana Wallis. Paul Barrett was fined £3,500 and told to pay costs in the landmark case. He had advertised items for sale – including two minibuses on the auction website and then bid for them himself under another username to boost the price. A new law brought in two years ago to conform to European legislation made the practise, known as "shill bidding" illegal. Lib Dem MEP and former solicitor, Diana Wallis, says she hopes the case will act as a warning to others trading on the internet. |

People are paying unfair prices on the internet because of so-called “shill-bidding”, that’s according to a Lib Dem. Paul Barrett from County Durham was convicted on Monday in the first case under a new law. The court heard he had sold several items on the auction site eBay and then bid for them himself under a different username upping the price. He’s been fined £3500 and ordered to carry out 250 hours of community work. Lib Dem MEP, Diana Wallis, was involved in the European legislation which the new law is based on. She says it means people trying to cheat the system can’t get away with it. |

The South West is well positioned to take a leading role in a Europe-wide Supergrid – that’s according to our region’s Lib Dem MEP. Graham Watson believes that renewable power could provide 40 per cent of our energy needs if all the generation was linked together. According to his vision, that would mean that even if the wind wasn’t blowing here, somewhere else in Europe could provide us with clean energy. And Graham Watson says, we in the South West not only have the potential to produce more renewable power, but experts from the region could also take a leading role in making the project a reality. |

New limits on using mobile phones abroad will put an end to shocking large bills – that’s the hope of North West MEP, Arlene McCarthy. From today [Thursday 1 July] the EU has introduced new caps on phoning and using the internet abroad. The cost of making and receiving voice calls whilst in another European country is falling for the second year in a row. And for the first time the price of downloading emails or using the internet by mobile abroad is also being cut. As Arlene McCarthy explains, to back up the lower prices, all phone users will have a limited spend of about £40 in data roaming to avoid racking up those huge bills. |

Holiday makers are going to benefit from lower mobile rates from today – that’s the message from North West Labour MEP, Arlene McCarthy. So-called roaming calls within Europe will now cost 33p plus VAT to make and 12.5p to receive. It’s the second year in the row that the EU has forced the companies to lower their prices. And this year, for the first time, the cost of using the internet on your phone overseas is also being brought down. Arlene McCarthy says consumers are now paying less than a third of the price for roaming calls compared to a couple of years ago. Note to editors: From 1 July 2010 Roaming Calls will cost 33p +VAT to make and 12.5p +VAT to receive. The wholesale Data Roaming price has been reduced to 66p per Megabyte and an automatic data roaming limit has been set to £41/month (customers can change this to what they like).
